This school year at Bridgewater-Raritan High School, one of Maria Kostis’ goals was to bring in guest speakers for her AP French students. As part of her ongoing effort to make French more immersive and meaningful, she invited two special guest speakers to visit during unit lunch and remain for her AP French class.
Her cousin Anna, a college graduate with a degree in English, shared her experience teaching English in France through the TAPIF (Teaching Assistant Program in France) initiative. During her year abroad, Anna lived and worked in a small French town, where she fully embraced the culture, language, and lifestyle. Her story gave students a firsthand look at what it’s like to live and work in France after college.
Joining Anna was her friend Lorène, a native of France currently studying law with the goal of becoming a judge. Lorène brought an authentic French perspective to the discussion, speaking about her education, her career goals, and what life is like for young adults in France today.
French 4A and French 4H students gathered during unit lunch to hear both Anna and Lorène speak about their experiences. Afterward, Ms. Kostis’ AP French students had the special opportunity to participate in a Q&A session entirely in French, challenging their language skills and giving them the chance to hold real conversations with native and fluent speakers.
These kinds of events have been part of Ms. Kostis’ efforts all year long to enrich students’ understanding of the French language and culture. By connecting them with real people and real stories, she hopes to inspire students to see French not just as a subject, but as a gateway to global connections and future opportunities.

Each year, Lockheed Martin, an aerospace and defense company, is the host to Code Quest, an annual international computer programming competition, taking place in person at Lockheed Martin facilities and virtually.
According to Dr.Eleni Arapaki, the AP Physics 1 and Teacher at Bridgewater-Raritan High School, teams of three high school students work together to solve problems by using JAVA, Python, C#, and/or C++ programming to complete the “quest”. The problem set consists of 20 to 30 challenging problems created by Lockheed Martin engineers and computer programmers. The students have to solve as many problems as possible within a 2.5-hour time limit by writing software programs that produce a predetermined output from a given set of input. US-based attendees at these events are offered the opportunity to apply for one of several summer internships across the Lockheed Martin corporation.
Bridgewater-Raritan High School participated in the Code Quest held on March 1 in Lockheed Martin’s facility in Moorestown. Dr. Arapaki and Ken Mascola, the Advanced Topics in Computer Science Teacher at Bridgewater-Raritan High School, brought three teams to compete in the advanced division. The Greek Gods (Anthony Channg, Ian Francis, and Foteini Gallou) placed 8th on site, the Eastern Engineers (Arya Vadya, Luvyakrish Manche, and Navneet Kalatheeswaran) placed 6th, and The Void Team (Jeffrey Hu, Ethan Pear, and Anika Seshan) ranked fourth. "Congratulations to all our kids for their dedication and hard work," Dr. Arapaki said.
Dr. Arapaki reported, “during the event, the students and the teachers had the opportunity to attend presentations on information about Lockheed Martin scholarships and internships, as well as career opportunities on AI & machine learning, advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, engineering & technology, finance & business operations, IT, and technical operations”
