Take me out to the ball game was the theme for the Unified PE students and staff at Bridgewater-Raritan High School.
To celebrate the end of Unified PE for the year, all four classes attended a minor league baseball game between the host Somerset Patriots and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater on Wednesday, May 27.
According to Cynthia Wong, the Special Education-Autism Teacher who oversees the Unified Peer Leadership program at Bridgewater-Raritan High School, Unified PE (formerly known as PE Partners) brings together students with intellectual disabilities and general education students to participate in physical education classes together throughout the school year.
“Each student with special needs is paired with a peer partner and practices important community-based and social skills that they have worked on all year in PE and STEP classes. During the trip, students practiced navigating the stadium, handling tickets, locating their section and seats, purchasing food items, using money skills, and learning appropriate times to cheer on the team,’ said Ms. Wong, who is also the Unified Basketball and Flag Football Coach at the high school.
Ms. Wong added, “The trip provided students with an opportunity to apply these real-world skills in a fun and inclusive environment while celebrating a successful year of Unified PE.”
If you are keeping score, New Hampshire defeated the Patriots in the Double-A game that day, 7-3.
