Bridgewater-Raritan High School students who are in Italian classes received a lesson on Friday, February 20.
Marco Cortigiani, an esteemed member of the organization Fiorentini nel Mondo, visited Bridgewater-Raritan High School and delivered a rich, highly engaging lesson on the famous Italian tradition of Carnevale.
According to the high school Italian teachers,s Guiseppina Bologno and Giuseppina DiMartino, during his visit, students explored the unique ways in which Carnevale is celebrated in different Italian cities, including Venice, Viareggio, and Ivrea.
“They learned about each city’s geographic location, distinctive customs, and the historical origins behind their celebrations. From the elegant and mysterious masks of Venice, to the elaborate floats of Viareggio, and the historic Battle of the Oranges in Ivrea, students gained a deeper appreciation for the diversity of Italian cultural traditions,” Ms. Bologno said.
Ms. Bologno further explained the presentation.
“As part of this immersive experience, students also participated in creating traditional Carnevale masks, connecting artistic expression with cultural understanding. This hands-on activity allowed them to bring to life what they had learned and further appreciate the symbolism behind this beloved celebration.”
“We are very grateful to Mr. Cortigiani for enhancing our classroom instructions, for his passion for Italy, his warmth, and humor. We look forward to continuing to provide meaningful cultural experiences that enrich our students’ understanding of the Italian language and heritage,” she concluded.
