How to ask for directions and how to catch a bus or a train were among the transportation topics that two guest speakers from RideWise educated Bridgewater-Raritan High School students in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program.

The speakers who represented RideWise were Sarah Chelli, the Senior Community Engagement Specialist, and Olivia Allegra, the School-Based Initiative Specialist.

RideWise is a non-profit organization that primarily serves Somerset County and focuses on promoting safe, sustainable and efficient transportation by connecting the public with options such as public transportation, biking, walking, carpooling and electric vehicles. RideWise offers education, travel training, workshops and resources for schools and businesses.

They spoke in Delfina Picchio’s classroom in Bridgewater-Raritan High School’s 700 building to her ESL 1 and 2 students, as well as the ESL 3 students from Jaime Bandel’s class.

“In our unit of study right now, we are learning about movement,” Ms. Picchio said. “The students are learning about how to ask for directions and how to catch a bus and use public transportation.”

“We tell the students where they can get transportation to such examples as Raritan Valley Community College (Branchburg), the hospital (Robert Wood Johnson University in Somerville), the Bridgewater Commons Mall, and the Target (in Bridgewater), “ Ms. Chelli and Ms. Allegra stated.
