The man who steered the Bridgewater-Raritan High School baseball team to its greatest season ever is quick to share the accolades.
That man, Max Newill, the Bridgewater-Raritan head coach, received the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) Section 1 Baseball Coach of the Year award during a ceremony that was held at the Pines Manor in Edison on Sunday, January 12.
He joined 28 other New Jersey scholastic coaches who received awards for coaching their sports. The day also featured the induction of 17 former coaches into the New Jersey State Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Coach Newill, as expected, rationed out his award.
“ I am incredibly honored and humbled by the coach of the year awards I have received for our 2024 season. However, these awards are not just about me -- they are a testament to the strength of our program, and the exceptional players who make it all possible,” Coach Newill said.
He orchestrated a program that won the school’s first Group 4 state tournament championship and set a school standard with the team’s final record of 30-3.
Bridgewater-Raritan also won the Somerset County Tournament and the Skyland Conference’s Delaware Division championships and finished as the No. 2-ranked team in New Jersey while it ended as the state's top-rated public school squad. Bridgewater-Raritan also finished ranked 42nd in the country by Prep Baseball Report.
“These awards belong to all of us — the players, past and present, the assistant coaches, and the supporters — who have worked together to create something special with the baseball program at Bridgewater-Raritan High School,” Coach Newill claimed.
